It popped in my head, randomly yesterday, that the Muscle Shoals album was recorded during the summer months in 1971. “Free Bird”, “One More Time”, “Preacher’s Daughter”, “Lend A Helpin’ Hand”, and “You Run Around” are dated June 28 - July 2, 1981. My favorite song, “White Dove”, was recorded between June 28 and July 26, 1971. “Wino”, “Comin’ Home”, and “Ain’t Too Proud To Pray” were all recorded on July 26, 1971.
The other songs on this album were recorded in 1971-1972, but don’t have specific dates in the CD liner notes. Overdubs were done in 1975-1976. If I had one CD to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be a tough decision but, this one would be it. It has a lot of my most favorite Skynyrd songs — “White Dove”, “Free Bird”, “Down South Jukin’”, among others.
The drummers on this collection are Rickey Medlocke and Bob Burns. The bassists are Greg T. Walker, Larry Junstrom, Ed King and Leon Wilkerson. Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ronnie Van Zant… Billy Powell playing the piano on “Free Bird”…the overdub sessions added the Honkettes. All recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. That’s a lot of Skynyrd history between all those names.
There aren’t any Skynyrd songs I don’t like, but I just love this album the best. I have the vinyl with fewer songs, too. Just simply amazing.
If I waited until July 26 to celebrate the anniversary of the songs in the graphic, I would probably forget - so I doing it now. :)
